Most oven-safe cookware can go in an air fryer when it fits the basket, tolerates the selected temperature, and does not block airflow. Metal, oven-safe ceramic, heat-resistant glass, and food-grade silicone are the most common choices.

Physical fit is not enough. Hot air must pass around the dish and reach the food. A pan that is too large or tall can slow cooking, reduce browning, and place food too close to the heater. Always follow both the appliance manual and the cookware manufacturer’s heat rating.

The key rule: cookware must be oven-safe

  • Check the oven symbol and heat limit

Every part, including handles and lids, must tolerate the selected temperature.

  • Leave room for air

The dish should not touch every wall or sit too close to the heating element.

  • Do not use damaged cookware

Cracks, chips, and weakened coatings increase the risk of failure.

Glass and ceramic

Use only products explicitly rated for oven use. Avoid moving very cold glass into a fully preheated basket or placing hot cookware on a cold, wet surface. Ceramic decorations and handles must also be heat-safe.

Metal and silicone

Metal conducts heat well and suits bread, cakes, meat, and pizza. Food-grade silicone is convenient for muffins and liquid mixtures but may brown the base less. Soft silicone molds are easiest to fill inside the basket.

What should never go in an air fryer?

  • Ordinary plastic and melamine

    Microwave-safe does not mean oven-safe.

  • Ordinary glass and jars

They are not designed for intense dry heat and may crack.

  • Sealed containers

Steam needs a safe way to escape.

How to choose the right size

Measure the flat basket base, the opening, and the height to the heater. Leave space at the sides and enough room to grip the dish safely once hot.

Can a dish reduce crispiness?

Yes. A solid base blocks air from reaching underneath. Use dishes for batters, casseroles, and sauces; cook fries, vegetables, wings, and breaded snacks directly in the perforated basket when possible.
